What Is Sensory Play?

Sensory play is any activity that encourages children to explore the world through their senses while actively engaging their brains and bodies.

Although many people associate sensory play with colorful rice bins or messy water tables, sensory experiences happen naturally throughout the day.

A preschooler smells herbs while helping prepare dinner.

A child jumps into a pile of autumn leaves.

All of these are sensory play.

True sensory play doesn’t require expensive toys or elaborate setups. It simply invites children to notice, explore, experiment, and discover using their senses.

Some sensory experiences are quiet and calming, while others are energetic and exciting. Together, they help children make sense of their environment.

More Than the Five Senses

Most of us learned about five senses at school:

  • Sight
  • Hearing

While these are important, developmental science tells us that children actually rely on eight sensory systems that work together every moment of the day.

Adults do not need to direct every moment of play.

Instead, your role is to create safe opportunities, observe your child, respond to their cues, and gently extend their learning.

Rather than asking many questions, try making simple observations:

“That sponge feels squishy.”

“You poured all the water into the big cup.”

“The ice is melting.”

“You’re balancing very carefully.”

These comments build language without interrupting exploration.

Children learn best when they feel safe, connected, and free to discover at their own pace.
